Makin (South Australia) was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives. Messrs W. M. Hughes, W. M. Marks and Maxwell, three of the breakaways from the Bruce Government, and Messrs. Massey and Greene, who withdrew from the National Party only yesterday, sat by themselves on the Opposition side of the House. Their former party was sadly depleted since the election and it was lioticable their former colleagues {issumed a most unfriendly manner towards; the breakaways. The Governor-General’s speech indicated an atempt would be made to improve the Federal Arbitration Act after the conference between representatilves of [the employers and the employees. Replesentativs of the Commonwealth would attend the five-power naval conference to be held in London., They would also attend the economic conference.
