HOME-MADE AEROPLANE

WHAKATANE YOUTH’S WORK. " LOCAL INTEREST AROUSED. Whakatane, October 19. An aeroplane has been built by John Allison, a Whakatane youth, who is a motor mechanic by trade. For many, months he has devoted his spare time and savings to the work, and has produced a machine which, it is claimed,, will stand all tests for , air worthiness. The young man is anxious to obtain a pilot’s certificate before he finally tests the machine himself, and the Mayor of JVhakatane, Mr. W. Sullivan, is interesting himself in the matter. At a meeting of the borough council last evening the Mayor expressed the' opinion that the town should do something .to assist financially Allison in obtaining his pilot’s certificate. -* It would be necessary, said the Mayor, for Allison to go to Auckland for three months to study before he could, get the certificate. The cost would be about £5O or £6O.

Members of the council said they were of opinion that the' public "would enthu-' siastically support Allison financially. It was decided that the Mayor should call a 'public meeting’ to find ways and means of sending the young man to Auckland to take an air pilot’s course.
