RESIGNATION OF CABINET

CRUCIAL PERIOD IN EGYPT PREPARING FOR ELECTIONS BRITISH TREATY THE ISSUE By Telegra.ph— Press . Assn.—Copyright. Australian Press Association. Received Oct. 3, 7 p.m. Cairo, Oct. 3. Stating that his object was to enable King Fuad to bring the Anglo-Egyptian treaty to a successful conclusion, the Prime Minister, Mahmoud Pasha, has resigned, amid great rejoicing in the Wafdist camp. It is not yet decided whom King Fuad will summon to form a Ministry for the purpose of superintending the elections, but among those mentioned is the King’s father-in-law, Abdelrahim Pasha. There is every prospect of the .liveliest election campaign being, conducted with more than the usual deluge of Egyptian oratory. Nahas Pasha had three interviews with the British High Commissioner, Sir Percy Loraine, when, it is understood, he promised that the treaty as drafted will be the basis of the elections. It is considered that the Wafd is almost certain to obtain an overwhelming majority at the elections. It remains to be seen whether they will then abandon the demand for complete independence. A later message states that Adly Pasha, an ex-Prime Minister, has agreed to form a temporary Cabinet. On the resignation of the Nahas Ministry in Egypt in June, 1928, King Fuad summoned Mahmud Pasha to form a new Government to hold elections. He acce. ted the task, and asked the Wafdists to join him. They refused, and it soon became clear that they were determined to make it impossible for any party but their own to govern Egypt. » They had found an excellent weapon in the Parliamentary machine managed by their chiefs, said the Times in a recent article, and they had no intention of losing their grip. Their attitude furnished Mahmud Pasha with an excellent justification for his next step. On July 19, 1928, King Fuad, on his advice, dissolved Parliament for three years, suspending the operation of the Electoral Law and certain articles dealing with the Press.
