RETURNS FOR SOUTH TARANAKI.

South Taranaki vital statistics for the month of August disclose increases of 13 births, 11 deaths and eight marriages when compared with the corresponding month of 1928. August 20, when .84 inches was recorded. Slightly over one inch more rain fell in the corresponding month of 1928, 4.91 inches being recorded in 18 days. The maximum fall that month was .96 inches on August 13. A series of euchre parties and dances in aid of the Turuturu School funds concluded on Thursday, when the prizes allotted to those gaining the highest points in euchre during the season.were awarded to Mrs. Wills and Mr. Payne. The dancers, too, were well catered for, and, under the able management of the master of ceremonies, Mr. Meharry, were productive of much entertainment and revenue. As a result of the func ; tions the school funds will benefit -to the extent of £3l 2s 4d. Mr. I. R. Robinson, district electrical engineer, arrived at Hawera last evening from Shannon at the invitation of the Hawera Aero Club. To-day he will consult with the committee of the club in regard to the proximity of the proposed electric power lines to the club’s grounds. The line as at present surveyed passes within two and a-half chains of the property leased by the club, and it is hoped that Mr. Robinson will be able to have the lines removed some distance further away. Two bankruptcies occurred in the Hawera district last month. In the corresponding month of 1928 none were recorded. A sale of Hawera properties at the order of the deputy-official assignee will be held at their Hawera rooms at 2 p.m. on Thursday by Messrs R. P. Morrissey and Co. PERSONAL. A motion of sympathy with the family of the late Mr. Samuel Turner was passed yesterday by the shareholders of the Kaupokonui Dairy Company. Mr. G. A. Burgess, president of the Hawera Bowling Club, has gone to Auckland with the intention of spending a month in the northern city to recuperate after an attack of influenza. Writing from London in July, Miss Adelaide Ballantyne, of Hawera, says she was invited to attend the reception of the New Zealand Boy Scouts given by Sir James and Lady Parr at the Hotel Victoria on July 23. Mr. W. O’Callaghan returned to Hawera on Saturday evening from Rotorua, where he has been playing in the golf tournament.

Death removed an old and. highly respected resident of Hawera, Mrs. Hutton, widow of the late Mr? T. Hutton, on Saturday after a short illness. Mrs. Hutton, who was 71’-years of age, came to New Zealand from England 58 years ago, residing first at, Wanganui and then at Patea. ‘She came to Hawera 30 years ago. She leaves a family of three sons and six daughters—’Messrs James (Brisbane), George (Stratford), Arthur (Halcombe), Mesdames H. P. Hansen and J. Olsen (Wairarapa), H. J. Godfrey (New Plymouth), Mrs. E. Gray and Miss C. Hutton (Hawera), and Miss M. Hutton (Wellington). There are also 17 grandchildren. Her husband predeceased her seven months ago.
