ADVERTISING IN SCHOOLS
PROBLEM FOR EDUCATION BOARDS. (By Wire—Special to News.) Auckland, Last Night. How far should advertising in schools be allowed to go? This question was debated at this morning’s meeting of the Auckland Education Board, when a well-known motor spirit firm sougnt permission to award scholarships calculated to advertise their particular brand of petrol for competition amongst school children. The Education Department advised the firm to submit its scheme to the various education boards in New Zealand, and if they received it favourably.it would be willing to draft a scheme. “We are opening up a very big question, that of advertising iu •schools," said the chairman, Mr. A. Burns. Mr. T. U. Wells thought the board should consult the department to see how far the matter was allowed to go. He did not approve of schools being used as advertising mediums. Mr. 11. S. W. King observed that if the competition was to be a national one then it was for the department to open the door to it. Mr. F. A. Snell urged that the board should absolutely set its face against advertising schemes being introduced into schools.
It was agreed to communicate with .other education boards to ascertain their attitude towards the competition, at the. same time pointing out to them the Auckland board's attitude in the matter.
