DOMINION’S PENSIONS BILL

REPORT SUBMITTED TO HOUSE. (By Wire—Parliamentary Reporter.) . Wellington, Last Night. The thirty-first annual report of the Pensions Department, presented to Parliament to-day, shows that the total amount of pensions paid during the year ended March 31, 1929, was £2,721,823, as compared with £2,631,361 for the previous year. The number of individual pensioners increased from 54,249 to 56,590. War pensions last year absorbed £1,184,903, as against £1,151,979 for 1928, and old-age pensions £1,060,760, as against £1,010,575. The claims lodged during the year' for family allowances totalled 1560 which, with the 247 outstanding from the previous year, made a total of 1807 dealt with. Of these, 1437 were accepted and 213 rejected. Of the rejected claims 138 represented cases where the income of tho family was in excess of the limit allowed.

During the year 363 claims from Maoris were dealt with, 332 being granted and 31 rejected.
