STUDENTS BECOME SEAMEN
SEEING WORLD FROM CARGO SHIP.
(By Wire—Special to. News.) Auckland, Last Night.
Travelling aboard the cargo steamer Canadian Conqueror as seamen are four university students from Canada. The vessel has arrived at Auckland from Montreal and Sydney, Nova Scotia. The call of wanderlust was insistent and these young men decided to see . the world during their vacation and incidentally to get hardened for the coming term’s sport. Three of the men are from the famous McGill University of Montreal. They are Mr. A. F. Mackenzie, who is studying law, Mr. J. F. Minnes, who aspires to° medical fame, and Mr. J. Michaels, who is taking up architecture. The fourth student is Mr. E. K. Morton, who hails from Dalhousie University of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Ho aims to be a journalist. His father is managing director of the Montreal Herald.
They are all sons of well-known eastern Canadian families, are about 19 years of age, and with one exception are employed on the Canadian Conqueror as deck boys. The fourth is mess boy. They are all hard and willing workers, says Mr. A. Webster, chief officer. They found it hard for a start, but in a short time became used to the manual work. The ’bosun . was nearly driven grey-headed at the beginning of the trip but they goon adapted themselves to their duties.
