THIRTEEN ARRESTS
CHARGES OF BETTING LAID POLICE COUPS IN TARANAKI RAIDS MADE IN FOUR TOWNS BOOKMAKING ALLEGATIONS I Thirteen arrests under the Gaming.. Act were made in Taranaki at 2.50 p.m. on Saturday during police raids carried out simultaneously in New Plymouth, Hawera, Stratford and Eltham. All the men were subsequently brought before justices of the* peace and remanded. Ten of them were charged with being bookmakers or keepers of common gaming houses, one with being an assistant, and two with being found on the premises. Those arrested were:— NEW PLYMOUTH. Allen, Herbert Thomas. Allen, John, Mascall, Robert. McGlashan, George. Shore, John. Ulander, Oscar Royce. HAWERA. Allen, Herbert. Teesdale, Thomas Henderson. Elder, William. Lavery, Edward. Connell, Thomas. STRATFORD, Sisarich, Dominick. ELTHAM. Novak, Antonio. Considerable sums of money were found! on some of those detained, it is under* stood, and these have been impounded by the police until the charges have been disposed of. Bail was allowed. The sureties were self £lOO and another of £lOO for those charged with bookmaking or keeping com* mon gaming houses, £5O and £5O for the alleged assistant and £5 each for the two men said to have been found on the premises. The raids throughout the district were organised from New Plymouth by Inspector D. C. Fraser and Detective A. B. Meiklejohn and were made to synchronise with the Wellington race meeting at Trentham, a gathering anticipated to make betting business brisk. In New Plymouth six men were arrested by Detective. Meiklejohn, Senr.-Sergt. McCrorie and Constables Antill, Brenchley, Mills and Small. They were brought before Mr. E. C. Hayton, J.P., soon after 4 p.m., charged with carrying on business as bookmakers, and remanded to appear on Wednesday. Mr. 11. H. Quilliam represented the two Allens and McGlashan and Mr. J. M. Hine, Mascall, Shore and Ulander. At Hawera five men were arrested, by Sergt. Henry and Constables Mullan, Scannell, Lemm and Thomason. They were brought before Mr. S. Blake, J.P., and remanded to appear on Thursday. Herbert Allen was charged with carrying on business as a bookmaker on June 22 and with keeping a common gaming house in Princes Street. Teesdale was charged with bookmaking on June 15 and with keeping a gaming house in Union Street. Eldei was charged with assisting in the management of a gaming house. Lavery and Connell were charged- with being found on the premises of a gaming house. At Stratford a visit was paid to th< restaurant in Broadway conducted by Sisarich. He was arrested and charged before Mr. G. E. Wilson, J.P., with keeping a common gaming house, after which hfl was remanded till to-day. According to the Stratford representative of the Daily News, it is understood that several men were found on the premises at the time of the raid and it is posible charges may be preferred against them. The arrest was made by Sergeant J. Power, who was accompanied by Constables Shields and Ruston.
At Eltham Novak, a restaurant keeper in Bridge Street, was brought before Mr. I. J. Bridger, J.P., on a charge of carrying on business as a bookmaker. He was remanded till to-morrow.
