KING'S THEATRE—STRATFORD

IMG PROGRAMME

James Hall and Fred Kohler have changed places. In “The Case of Lena Smith,’' directed by Josef von Sternberg, for Paramount, Kohler has a sympathetic role and James Hall is seen in a menacing part. In this romance between the dashing young cavalry officer in the Austrian Army, and a Hungarian peasant girl, Esther Ralston is Lena Smith, who comes to Vienna for adventure. After a career of romantic leads, Hall plays a “heavy” role opposite the blonde star. Fred Kohler, who is remembered for his villainous roles in “Underworld,” “Forgotten Faces,” arid “The Drag Net,” is seen in the part of a Hungarian farmer, who gives his ten years' earnings to help the girl recover her child. “Mlle. Parley Voo’ is a British picture starring Estelle Brody. The story concerns a stolen ruby, whicii is set against a scintillating background of stage production. The theatrical scenes, for which a full-sized theatre was built at tiie Gaumont Studios, are especially convincing, and certainly. ft very clever and novel climax to the picture is provided by' the shadow show on the stage, where the murderer and thief is arrested behind the screen, and the audience in the theatre takes it for part of the show and warmly applauds.
