ROAD-RAIL COMPETITION

INTER-DOMINION CONFERENCE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, July 9. Every phase of railway working was discussed at the Australian and New Zealand railway conference in Adelaide, which was attended by Mr. H. H. Sterling, manager of the New Zealand railways, who returned by the Ulimarua today. He said motor competition received full consideration, but he could not state the decision of the conference as it had to be submitted to the Government. His policy had been not one of fighting motor transport, but one that would work in with that type of transport. “The position in Australia is much the same as in New Zealand,” Mr. Sterling said. “The conference disclosed that Australia is feeling the competition keenly. It is generally recognised that the cut-throat competition of unregulated road services which is the outcome of greater activity in road improvements is undesirable.”
