OPUNAKE HARBOUR.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —The decision of a minority of the Opunake Harbour Board to call a public meeting to place loan proposals before it, appears to be an attempt by the chairman to evade his responsibility in connection with the harbour, and place it on the ratepayers. His name figured in the papers as a nominator of a member of the New Plymouth Harbour Board, and he also appeared to be taking a fairly lively interest in meetings held prior *to that election, and this, coupled with his evident determination to force responsibility on to the ratepayers without delay, cannot but help lead us to think a bit. The question at present is not so much whether the expenditure of an additional £20,000 is going to make the port revenue producing—there does not seem much doubt but that it will —but the question in most ratepayers’ minds is whether the present board can be entrusted with the expenditure. The recent meetings have shown us that there are some members on the board possessed of sufficient backbone not to be lead into supporting resolutions placed before them. Let' all ratepayers be cautious and try and ascertain the real meaning of the forthcoming meeting. I assume from the attitude 0 adopted by the majority at the last meeting, that if ratepayers will not support their scheme at . the meeting they will resign. Then ratepayers —not electors —may have an opportunity of placing younger men with vigour and business ability, on the board. —I am, etc.. “TAIHOA.” Opunake, July 6-
