COAL “STORED” IN WAGGONS

REASONS FOR TRUCK SHORTAGE'. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, July 9. The Alinister of Railways, the Hon. W. B. Taverner, remarked to a deputation to-day that the department was not a storage organisation but a transport concern. The deputation was from the Alineowners’ Association, which complained that the collieries were working under difficulties owing to insufficient trucks being available. Air. Taverner was saying that inquiries had already been proceeding, and that part of the trouble was that shipping interests had been a great deal to blame through holding loaded waggons. He sssured the deputatio. that the necessity for improvement in the trucking system was recognised by him. Estimates now under consideration by Cabinet provided for a considerable increase in the rolling stock. Some waggons v/ere already being constructed, and he hoped this would be followed next year by a further increase. He agreed to make the investigation asked for by the deputation.
