Facelli (Italy) 1, Lord Burghley 2. Time, 53 2-ssec. AMATEUR ROAD CYCLING HEATLEY WINS BY A RIM. BOYS’ RACE TO H. SNOWDEN. At Vogcltown on Saturday afternoon the second race of a series of amateur cycle races fo r the Varnham Cup was decided. The course was from Doralto Road, around Hutchinson’s shop, across the main road and back to the starting point, a distance of 11J miles. Details are: — L. Heatley 1 F. Reed 2 J. Hutchinson 3 H. Cavaney (senr) 4 Also started —Donaldson, Gardiner and Peel. Peel, who was first away, was not troubled with any of the back markers till the crossing w r as reached, then Gardiner and Cavaney joined him and raced for the main road, where Hutchinson and Heatley and Reed caught them and made the pace for the judge. Terrific pace was put on in the straight with a good tail wind, Heatley, Reed, Hutchinson, Cavaney and Peel riding in a bunch. Fifty yards from the judge Heatley broke away, followed by Reed and Hutchinson, Heatley getting the verdict by a rim from Reed, who beat Hutchinson by half a wheel. The points now stand for the cup as follows:—L. Reed 7, J. Horne 5, J. Hutchinson 4, L. Heatley 4, H. Cavaney 1, R. Gardiner 1. LARGE FIELD IN BOYS’ RACE. A large field of 16 faced the starter for the° boys’ race on a miscellaneous assortment of machines. It was the first race of a series for a trophy donated by Mr. Lovell, while there is also a second and third prize in the competition. Details are: — H. Snowden (scr), smin 44sec 1 H. Cavaney junr. (35sec), 6min 20sec 2 B. Barlow (20sec), Gmin llsec 3 N. Millman (ssec), smin sSsec 4 Also started—N. Tippins, P. Knowles, J. McKechnie, R. Hookham, V. Carrol, C. Ryan, A. Crombie, J. Carrol, J. Henderson, M. Chatterton, G. Tippins and E. Richards. The course was from the Doralto Road corner, miles along the Hurworth Road and back to the starting point, a distance of three miles. The points are: H. Snowden 5, H. Cavaney 3, B. Barlow 2, N. Millman 1. The riders adjourned after the races to the residence of Mr. and Mrs E. J. Hutchinson, where afternoon tea was provided. Mr. Varnham extended to the hosts the thanks of the company.
