LEAGUE CYCLISTS’ RACES

FIRST SERIES CONCLUDED C. AROA AND A. TAUNT TAKE CUPS RACES TO CLAFFEY AND TUFFERY The final races of the first series in all three grades were decided by the New Plymouth League Cycle Club on Saturday, when 34 cyclists faced the starter for the different events. The A grade race was to Okato and back and was won by L. Claffey, while L. Tuffery came home first in the B. grade round South, Hurford, Bennett and Barrett Roads. M. Hargraves won the messengers’ race over a distance of four miles. By gaining fastest time and fourth place in the A. grade C. Aroa took Mr. W. Roberts’ cup for the series with a two point lead from W. Brewster, who was awarded the club medal, arid A. Ellis. In the B. grade A. Taunt was unplaced but retained his lead on points for the series to win the Labour Day Cup, J. Wigg’s second place on Saturday putting him within a point of the winner, and giving him the club medal. The series for the messengers’ silver medal was won by D. Boulton. Tho following officials controlled the races: —Starter and time keeper, Mr. A. George; judges, Messrs. G. Tippins, W. Yardley, E. Knofflock and F. Orbell; turn steward at Okato, Mr. D. Lobb; secretary, Mr. D. George; committee, Mr. W. Priest: referee and road steward, Mr. R. Aroa. The results were: — A. GRADE. Final of five races for Mr. W. Roberts’ cup and the club’s gold medal. L. Claffey (13min), Ihr 31min 18sec 1 C. Lehrke (Gmin), Ihr 26min 36sec 2 D. Beer (Gmin), Ihr 26min 3G l-ssec 3 S. McCrinn (scr), Ihr 21min 56sec * C. Aroa (scr), Ihr 21min sGsec * A. Ellis (65sec), Ihr 23min 2scc 6 *Dead heat S. McCann and C. Aroa (scr.), gained fastest time. Also started: R. Yardley (sec.), G. Gilbert (Gmin), W. Brewster (65sec). Yardley punctured two miles past Oakura when still with the other scratch men, and Gilbert a little further on when with his co-markers. Brewster retired at Tataraimaka, where.the scratch men caught Ellis. At the turn Claffey led by 3’Jmin from Beer, Lehrke, McCann, Aroa and Ellis. The order was the same until the finish, Claffey winning easily by about half-a-mile. Lehrke was too good for Beer in a short sprint for the line. Aroa came with his characteristic “jump” at the finish to cross the line on terms with McCann. Cup points: C. Aroa 12, W. Brewster 10, A. Ellis 10, S. Parker (GOsec). B. Sole (3min). At the turn on to Hurford Road Reilly, Wigg, Tuffery and Nodder caught B. Sole but lost ground passing a flock of sheep. Roberts and R. Sole, both riding well, together with Parker, were next. About 30sec later came G. Sole, Haw, McMillan and Henry together. McMillan took a turn too fast and fell and Taunt hit a dog. Turning on to the Barrett Road Tuffery, Reilly, Wigg and Nodder were leading in a bunch, closely followed by Roberts and R. Sole together. Roberts punctured when, going well. Roy Sole followed the leading four all the way to the finish, but could not catch them, finishing about 150 yards behind them. A close finish resulted in Tuffery winning by d wheel from Wigg, Nodder being a length back, two lengths ahead of Reilly, Cup points: A. Taunt 9, J. Wigg 8, H. Parker 6, L. Brown 6, C. Henry 4, L. Tuffery 4, P. Henry 3, I. McMillan 2, G. Sole 1, T. Haw 1, Roy Sole 1, Reilly 4. MESSENGERS. Final of three races for medal. M. Hargrave (Imin 35sec), lOmin 50see 1 B. Berryman (35sec), lOmin IGsec 2 W. Martin (Imin 35sec), llihin llsec 3 G. Tuffery (lOsec), lOmin 4see .. 4 R. Newell (scr), 9min 55sec 5 Newell gained fastest time. Also started:—D. Boulton (scr), E. Hook (lOsec), R. Charters, G. Riordan (25sec), J. Horner (35secj, P. Whitehead (Imin 20sec), N. Knight (2min). Hargraves gained a good lead on the return journey and won by about 50 yards from Berryman, who just beat Martin near the finish. Tuffery and Newell finished next, Tuffery being too good in the final sprint. Charters, Horner, Hook and Whitehead, in that order, followed. Medal points: Boulton 7, Tuffery 5, Charters 4, Erb 4, Hargraves 4, Berryman 3, Martin, Newell and Horner 2. r ,The following series of races for all grades commence in a fortnight’s time:— A. Grade.—Waihi factory, 22 miles; A. George’s Cup and W. Hookham’s medal. B grade. —Waitara Road, 13% miles; E. Simpson’s Cup and R. Aroa’s medal. Messengers.—Three and a-half miles; two medals. A club run of eight miles will be made from the Waiwakaiho next Saturday for messenger boys, when older members of the club will coach the boys. ROAD RACING IN WELLINGTON. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The 30-mile road cycling race was won by F. Franklyn, with S. Wright second and J. Campbell third. Fastest time was secured by S. Wright, Simin 45sec.
