PLAIN AND FANCY DRESS BALL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A children’s plain and fancy dress ball, followed by dancing for adults, took place in the town hall on Tuesday evening last. Tho object of tho function was to assist the funds of the Stratford Fire Brigade and Band queen (Mbs W. Wilson), who was present in person for the occasion. Unfortunately the function was arranged on pretty sho't notice, and for this and other reasons the attendance was not all that could have been desired. However, those who attended seemed to enjoy themselves. The hall had been prettily decorated with coloured streamers and greenery by members of the local fire brigade, and music was supplied by Feek’s orchestra. Each child present was given some small toy as a memento of the occasion, Mrs. I. Evans presided at the piano during the course of a children’s dance known as tho finger polka. Messrs. C. H. Brewer, A. Melville and A. Guy were M’s. C. Among those appearing in fancy costume were the following: Pierrette, Molly Sevrene; umbrella, Maisie Bennie; butterfly, Sadie Bertie; Charlie Chaplin, Eon Brewer; powder puff, Joan Brewer; fairy queen, Miss J. Wilson; Egyptian lady, Violet Fever; folly, Doris Harper; Indian squaw, Alice Freeman; merry-go-round, Dulcie Shepherd; fairy, Sheila Harper. The committee responsible for the supper arrangement? was under the general supervision of Mesdames Wilson and Davies (Stratford) and Mesdames I. Evans and O. H. Brewer (Kaponga) who were assisted by Several visiting committee members. A monologue given by Miss J. Wilso i, of Stratford, received quite an ovation, while extras played during the evening were contributed by Misses Myrtle Evans and Mary Guy. Mr. E. W. Blackwell acted as doorkeeper. The takings amounted to approximately £5, but with badges sold by committee members during the evening, and several other novelty events there should be a fair surplus to assist the queen’s fund. The orchestra, I understand, gave Its services practically gratuitously, and the refreshments for supper were also given. GENERAL. A large number of local cricket elub members and enthusiasts visited New Plymouth for the purpose of seeing the Australians at play. Judging from tho number of dancing enthusiasts that left here on Wednesday night to attend the Awatuna Tennis Club’s ball, they should just about have ensured the success of the ball itself. PERSONALS. A distinguished visiting player at the local croquet lawns on Wednesday aftc--noon was Mrs. Rhodes Williams, of Karori, Wellington, a playing member of'the Kelburn club. She had been attending the croquet tournament in Hawera, and at the invitation of members of this elub accepted the opportunity of playing on the local lawns. After her game yesterday she expressed the opinion that all she had heard about it, namely, that it was equal to any of the greens in South Taranaki, and far ahead of some of them, was quite true. Mrs. J. Macks, who with her husband and family lived her a few years ago, but is now in business at Mamuku, was a visitor here on a brief stay this week.

Miss L. Hoddinott, who has been the guest of Mrs. A. Powell for the past few days, left on Thursday morning for Ngaere to visit other friends there. She afterwards proceeds to her home in Palmerston North before taking up a position on the staff of the St. Helen’s hospital in Wellington. Mrs. A. Powell, who. lias been on a visit to her brother, "Mr. J. Candy, of Palmerston North, returned home at the latter end of the week. KAPONGA CYCLE CLUB.
