A deputation of Labour members of Parliament asked the Premier (Mr. T. R. Bavin) to reconsider the decision to close the Walsh Island shipyard and convene a conference of both parties to the dispute over the bonus system. The deputation emphasised the serious effect the closing of the works would have both on Newcastle and the surrounding district. Later the Cabinet considered the request and decided that the works would re-open on Monday only if the men agree to return to work under the bonus system. The Government will then be willing to hear any requests or proposal the men may make, but unless the men first return the works will be closed on Friday.
