FIRE IN CORONATION HALL

DEFENCE PROPERTY SUFFERS. Fire from an unknown cause broke out in the Defence Department’s office in the Coronation Hall at New Plymouth shortly before six o'clock yesterday evening, and was extinguished only after the walls and ceiling of the room, besides some of the defence property, had been considerably damaged. Only the prompt arrival of the Fire Brigade prevented what would have been a disastrous outbreak, fir stored in an adjoining room were twenty-five thousand rounds of ammunition. The hall itself escaped damage, although it was filled with dense smoke, which caused many people to think that the whole place was ablaze.
