OMATA SCHOOL
BREAKING-UP AND CONCERT. Every child in Omata went home tired but happy last night. Children big and small, tall and short, and in every kind of fancy costume, from a dainty leafgreen elf to an awesome Bibendum, danced and sang at the school breakingup Ceremony. The first part of the programme after the grand march was given by the children in a number of attractive songs, dances and recitations. At 10 o’clock supper was served for the children and the floor cleared for dancing for the adults present. The chairman, Mr. S. Vickers, during an interval, congratulated the staff upon the excellence of their year’s work and upon the preparations they had made for the fancy dress ball. To Miss Merrilees, Miss K. Morris and Mrs. MeHardie particularly the' thanks of the committee and staff were due for their willing assistance. The school football team had been successful in winning the Thomas Cup, and Sir. Vickers thanked those residents who had transported the team to the various matches. The past year's work had in every respect been successful, continued Mr. Vickers. The new school opened during the year had made conditions much more pleasant for pupils and staff, and perhaps more healthful. To train nearly 100 children in dances, choruses and recitations, Mr. L. A. McHardie, the headmaster, and Miss J. Merrilees had spent several arduous weeks, but their reward was surely in the bright eyes, happy faces, and joyous voices of the children. The ladies of the supper committee had done splendid work. Mr. N. Meredith was the pianist. About £l5 was raised by means of the concert, and the school library and fund for playing requisites will benefit to that extent.
