CORRESPONDENCE.

AN APPEAL FOR THE AFFLICTED. (To the Editor.) Sir, —Will you be good enough to insert this appeal in your paper? It is now eight years since the war ended, and still we must go on appealing to the people to help those stricken men who in 1914 answered Britain's call “to arms.” Each year we hope the number of mentally afflicted soldiers in the Porirua Hospital will be less, but each year word comes from the medical superintendent that there are more cases. Last year there were 70 cases, and more this year, so we feel we must make a greater effort than ever. Farmers, especially dairy farmers (and we are a dairy farming community entirely), are experiencing almost a disastrous financial year, and we do so wish the need for collecting did not exist. However, fasts must be faced, and we must not forget the unfortunate soldiers away out of sight and still suffering untold agony of mind. We must not let our troubles prevent our helping to cheer those stricken men. Word always conies gratefully acknowledging our efforts each year. We have even received letters from the patients saying how much it helps them to know they are still thought of. Ou Tuesday, December 14. a street collection will be taken up and a shop for sweets, cakes and produce of all kinds will be opened in Manaia. May I, on behalf of my committee, ask that the people of Manaia and the Wainrate West County will please remember this day and send donations and also come prepared to buy and to give? Everyone will enjoy their Christmas more fully when they feel they have helped the unfortunate soldiers to a happier day than is usually their lot.—l am, etc., C. MITCHELL. Chairwoman Manala Ladies’ Patriotic Committee.
