Mr. Ken Webster is a visitor to New Plymouth.

A Dunedin message reports thej(death or Mrs. Julia Anne Tayler, the first white child born in Otago. She was born at Waikauiti on April 21, 1841.

Mr. William Coote, Unionist member for Ulster in the House of Commons, died suddenly at Belfast (says a London cable).

A London cablegram reports that Messrs. Dreadon and Greenslade (New Zealanders) have become Fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons.

Second-Lieutenant D. E. MdC. Thomson, of the First Battalion, Taranaki Regiment, has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant.

Messrs. O. Hawken and J. R. Corrigan, M.P.’s, returned last night by the mail train from Wellington, where they have been attending the investiture of Major-General Sir Charles Fergusson as Governor-General.

Cabled advice has been received in Palmerston North from London of the death of Mr. Frank Geoffrey Burton Waldegrave, formerly Under-Secretary of Justice. He had been living in England for the last ten years. Private advice received in New Plymouth states that Mr. W. Messana, better known as Mr. W. Tait, who was a prominent figure in South Taranaki nine years ago, had died suddenly on his farm at Te Hana, North Auckland, on Sunday. Mr. Messana was GO years of age.

Mr. A. W. Diprose, M.A., has been appointed to the A grade position on the staff of the New Plymouth. Bovs’ High School rendered vacant by the death of Mr. R. H. Rockel. The appointment of an assistant master to fill the B grade position rendered vacant by Mr. Diprose’s promotion has been deferred until after the visit of the As-sistant-Director of Education (Dr. E. Marsden) to New Plymouth this week. The terms of appointment of Messrs. F. W. Atkinson and S. G. Smith, M.P., Government nominees on the New Plymouth High Schools’ Board, expiring at the end of this year, it was deeded at the meeting of the board last night to re nominate Mr. Smith for one of the positions. As Mr. Atkinson does not seek re-election, the nomination of a successor to him was left in the hands of the chairman.

Mr. Cyril Roy Knight, an Australian, but now of New York, Jias been appointed professor of architecture at the Auckland University College. Mr. Knight is a native of Sydney and is only 31 years of age. He served overseas with the Australian Field Engineers, and has studied in England, Paris and America. He holds first-class honours for, his degree in architecture al the Liverpool University, and is an associated member of the Koval Institute of British Architects—Prebs Association.

The death has Occurred at Mataheru of Paratene Ngata, father of the Hon. A. T. Ngata, M.P., aged between 70 and 80 years (says a Gisborne telegram). Paratene Ngata was one of the foremost members the famous Ngatiporou tribe. He was a keen supporter of any movement to bring Maori land on the East Coast under cultivation, and supported advanced ideas in farming. In the early days deceased was known throughout thf’North Island as a native agent and Laud Court assessor. His wife predeceased him many years ago. Deceased, who has been ailing for the last twelve months, leaves three sons, Renata, Hone and the Hon. Apirana Ngata, ALP.
