CONTEMPT OF COURT.
EX-DETECTIVE’S METHODS. REJOINDER TO MAGISTRATE. TWO DAYS’ IMPRISONMENT. By Telegraph—Tress Association. Dunedin, Last Night. John Frederick Hammerly, an exmember of the detective force, was before the court to-day on an adjourned hearing in respect to charges of assault and using indecent language at Opoho on November 13. Hammerly has been making frequent appearances in the court recently, and his methods of conducting his own cases have severely tried the patience of the magistrates. To-day he was particularly troublesome, and when he informed Mr. H. W. Bundle, who had directed him as to a line of questioning, that the witness “was in his (Hammerly’s) . hands,” Mr. Bundle promptly committed him for contempt of court.
Hammerly was charged in the afternoon with contempt of court, and His Worship inflicted a sentence of 14 days’ imprisonment. Hammerly, however, pleaded that he was suffering from deafness and had been treated by a specialist, whereupon His Worship reduced the sentence to one of 48 hours.
