A request that the council should do everything possible to encourage a war on rats and mice was made by the Health Department to the New* Plymouth Borough Council last night. The department drew attention to recent grave reports concerning an outbreak of plague in Los Angeles and South Africa, and stated that in New Plymouth, being a port, particular attention was required, as the danger of plague entering the town was greater than in other centres. When it was remembered that one rat alone was capable of producing 50 or 60 rats a year, it was easy to understand, the department added, that constant war must be waged against these rodents and also against mice. The borough inspector (Mr. R. Day) reported that he had effected a clearance of rats at the dump. It was important that residents should at once take precautions, he added. The council decided to defer taking active measures until after the holidays, as it was considered that the public would not take part In a campaign at this season of the yeat. The first of a series of to children on John Bunyan’s work was delivered at the MTiiteley Hill last night by the Rev.- Palgrave Davy. The “Holy War” was the subject, and this will be continued each evening for the remainder of the week at the Baptist Church. Each afternoon at the Fitzroy Methodist Churdi, Bunyan's “Pilgrim’s Progress” will form the subject of Mr. Davy’s remarks.
