(By “Moturoa.”) The spring meetings are now in full swing, and for the next week at least punters will have much to occupy their attention. There will be racing at Ashburton, Avondale and Otaki to-day ; aud the two latter places on Monday; at Awapuni on Wednesday; at Geraldine on Thursday and Friday; and at Greenmeadows on the following Saturday. Nine race days in one week ought to satisfy the most voracious Principal interest centres on the Avondale spring meeting, where liberal stakes have attracted some of the best horses in the Dominion. The Avondale Cup is worth £2000; the Avondale Stakes, for tiwo-year-olds, £ 1000 ; and Flying Stakes £5OO. These valuable prizes prove that the Avondale Club is out to attract the best in the country, and the progress of Ute northern club is shown by

comparison with the stakes raced for ten years ago, when the Cup was only worth £600; the Avondale Stakes and Avondale Guineas £225 each; and the Flying Stakes £250. The Avondale Cup, 1% miles, has attracted eighteen, but of these quite one-half have to be taken on trust for such a trying journey. Gold Light, who tops the list. Is a great mare, and a proved stayer, but some argue that it Is a bit early in the season to expect her to be at her best, and slid will certainly require to be ‘ all there” to succeed to-day with 9st. 31'bs. Musketoon, whose penalty of 51bs. only brings his weight up to Bst. 51 bs . must better conditioned, a n d he made many friends by his victory at Wanganui on Saturday, when he came at the riglrt end, and finished like a real Stayer. Probably the imported horse will have many friends to-day. and his bankers are sure to get a good run. Arch Salute, Landslide, and IHiMninatlon read well amongst the middle weights, and Boomerday may beat those lower down. When the tote bells stop ringing this afternoon it may be found that Musketoon, Gold Light, and Illumination will have heaps of admirers. Nineteen remain In the Flying Stakes, six furlongs, and public racing and track form points to Solifortu, Broadwood, Lady Ridicule and Town Bank being in condition to run out a solid six furlongs. Town Bank is generally considered to have been thrown into the race with 6st. 71bs., but it Is difficult to get a lad at that weight to show to advantage when opposed to the best horsemen in the Dominion. Broadwood has been showing splendid track form, and the same may be said </f Lady Ridicule. Soliform has won at Riceartou and at Wanganui this season, and a 21bs. penalty only brings his weight up io Bst. Tibs. He won with slbs. lass at Wanganui, and. smart as Town Bank may be, the Solferino gelding may be the one to “break the bank.” A good field should contest the Avondale Stakes, five furlongs, but with so many “green’’ youngsters In the field it Is not a race which [anyone would be wise to go nap. Lady Cavendish (Absurd—Bonny Portland), Mimetic (Comedy King—Joyeuse), Master Mind (Lucullus—Avon Park), Gold Acre (Linacre —AuIrioty), and Oreum (King John—Desert Gold) are all reported to go fart, and the winner

may come from amongst that bunoh. With a start Lady Cavendish or Mimetic should run well. AU the minor events at Avdndale are likely to see big fields saddled up, and amongst those engaged are several which have been running well forward lately. Among#k the number might be mentioned Ilka, Knighthood and Kuhio. Considerable rain has fallen on Mrs coast lately, and the track at Otaki is likely to be on the heavy side for to-day’s races. Nukuimai has only to reproduce form to be heard of in distance handicaps at the meeting, and report says that Goldpiece, Padonna, Mountain Signa)!, Purseproud, Kalakaua and Counter Attack are very fit candidates In the minor events. Equitable Is an unlikely starter at the meeting. When Serene ran ?n in third place in the Trial Plate at the Dannevirke Hunt meeting he was only supported on the machine to the extent of a few pounds, and was paying something in the vicinity of £3OO to win. Serene is an. Austral! an-bred three-year-old gelding by the successful Seremond—-Blue Stockings, and though not nearly ready yet, he is coming on with every gallop, and will win a race for Mr. W. H. Gaisford- before very

Atapo, with W. Bowden on top, was backed each day a/ Dannevirke, but could not act in the heavy going, and had to put up with second money each time.. A T apo tnd Lucrative are about the only Quarantine horses that can gallop, and both have be a u unlucky with the colours up. Nigger Minstrel has been galloping In fine style since his arrival in Sydney, :>nd with Ashley Reed in the saddle, he is due to ccntest the Rosehill Guineas, nine furlongs, today’. Amongst his opponents will be Heroic and a number of other A.J.C. Derby candidates, so that the New Zealander's running will he followed with interest by Aussie sports as well as New Zealanders.

The Awapuni-trained Birthmark, by Bezonian —Clovelly mare, showed pace at Marton, and a'cted as runner-up each start at Dannevirke, being narrowly beaten each day. He should not be long in earning a winning bracket. Degage, who beat him on Thursday, is a smart three-year-old filly by Kilbroney—(Miss de Vai, the latter being the dam of Rose de Vai (by Hymettus). Winners wore very easy to pick each day at Dannevirke, but the dividends returned were very poor. This year the Dannevirke Racing Club raced early in the season, and the result was disastrous. Possibly December racing will be reverted to next year, providing suitable dates can be secured. Oak Rose is a rattling good mudlark, and, while the others were slipping and sliding all over the course on Thursday, the aged Maharanui gelding sailed through the slush In fine style, and just got home from the useful Kovno. Gloaming’s “six” in 1.14, registered at P»andwlck on Thursday, was a splendid trial for the Hill Stakes, to be run at RosehllL thia afternoon. Gloaming’s weight is 9st., and The Monk The Hawk are on the same level. Ballymena will carry 8.11 (if started), and other figuring in the race Include Father’s Voice 7.12, Bonaparte 7.12, and Bosh 6.13. Roy Reed hud eleven rides at Wanganui and registered three firsts and three seconds. At Dannevirke on Wednesday he scored twice on Tussore, once on Lady Gay, and was third on Merry Day and Master Black. On Thursday at the same place he won on Degage and Merry Day. Roy is in good form at present. Songbird, who was down to race at Ashburton, has not raced since the autumn of 1923, and in the interval has done light duties at the stud. As he is only in his sixth year, and is now quite sound again, he should be worth persevering with on the track.

Mr. A. McDonald, R. S. Bagby and the three-year-old Killochra returned from Sydney this week. On the same boat were Royal Despatch, Molyneaux and Alfonso. Names secured for Avondale Stakes candidates include the following :—Sevang (Absurd —Moira Machree) ; Billikins (Lucullus —'Gluten mare) ; Magical (Trillion—(Pretty Nell) ; and Memoir (Romeo—Cadence). Moira Machree is the dam of Loyal Irish, Ma Boughal, etc., while Cadence gave ns Oranga, Flying Feather, and Thurence. RACING FIXTURES. Sept. 20.—Ashburton County R.C. spring.
