IMPROVBW' THE PARK. (From Our Own Reporter.) Stratford, Nov. 26. The mueh-diseussed ten-foot strip of earth along the north side of the tennis courts in Victoria Park is now being removed to the level of the courts by borough workmen, the club having agreed to pay £lO towards the cost of the work, provided the top soil was retamed by the club for top-dressing pur-i poses. The balance of the strip is of' fieavy clay and is being used to level ott the northern-corner of the proposed hockey ground nearby. When the atrip is finally excavated and the alterations to the courts effected, the tennis club will possess ample ground at either end of their courts. The caretaker of thepark (Mr. Bone) has recently planted climbing roses and shrubs along the public aide and sweet peas are growing strongly beneath the south line of wirenetting. When all the flowers are in bloom the courts will not only have a beautiful approach, but will present a; pleasing appearance from the pavilion.' Further on, towards the sportsground, the Domain Board has erected substantial standards for swinge and sea-saws,' which should be th e delight of children.The swings are being erected in a shady spot near the head of the lake. COW JUDGING AT SHOW. In the advanced secondary and secondary sections of the cow-judging competitions at the Stratford Show’, the judge (Mr. F. Ranford) was well pleased' with the work of the pupils and considered the results quite up to last year’s standard. The primary school work was said to be disappointing. The results are:— Secondary advanced (14 entries, all from the Stratford Technical High School), to judge a purebred cow on type:—W. Cottier (gold medal), Eva Birkett 2, L. Gower 3, 'B. Martin 4. Secondary (80 entries, all pupils of Stratford Technical High School), same conditions.—l. Tarrent 1, E. Geever 2, H. Wilmhurst 3, D. Wilson 4, J. Preo 5, D. Callaghan 6, E. Bone 7. Primary school (six entries), to judge a grade cow on dairy points.—L. Harrison (Ngaere) 1, C. Walker 2, J. Wheeler (Stratford) 3. GENERAL ITEMS. Mr. and Mrs. C. Speck, of Stratford, returned on Saturday after an enjoyable holiday in Australia. Mr., H. T. Cooper, w’ho is taking over the well-known hardware business trading as the Taranaki Hardware Co., has had 28 years’ experience in the hardware trade, the past eight having been spent in the Stratford district, where he has gathered an extensive knowledge of the requirements of farmers and others. Prior io coming to Taranaki he was for many years with the firm of -John Duthie and iCo., Wellington, where he had charge of various departments and gained a comprehensive insight. The policy of the new’ management Will be along the same lines as those so successfully adopted by the late proprietor (Mr. S. G. Rimmington). Diaries for 1924 now’ to band for desk or pocket.
