AMERICAN TARIFF REFORM.
A BLOW AT THE TRUSTS. SAVING OF £175,000,000 A YEAR. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 4, 10.25 p.m. London, April 4. The Chronicle's Washington correspondent predicts that the Tariff Bill will save consumers £175,000,000 annually. The loss of revenue will be only £20,000,000, the difference being the profits accruing to the trusts. The measure is the nearest approach to free trade that has_ been proposed since the eve of the Civil War, when foodstuffs were placed on the free list.
As the Senate is vigorously opposed to freeing wool, many anticipate tlint :i compromise will be arrived at by halving tlie duty.
