A PRISONER'S ESCAPE
THE POLICE ON HIS TRACK. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Wednesday. J. Ehrman, who was arrested' in Wellington in connection with the charges of cargo stealing in Auckland escaped from custody at Te Kuiti, while being brought to Auckland by the Main Trunk express. Ehrman was in custody of Constable Smart and was not handcuffed. When the train stopped at Te Kuiti for refreshments Ehrman was standing on the platform of the carriage with the constable behind him. As the crowd streamed towards the refreshment room Ehrman stepped off the carriage and mingled with them, ami the constable lost him in the crowd. It is now ascertained that Ehrman left Te Kuiti in a buggy and proceeded in the direction of Kawa. The police are now on his track.
CAPTURED TWENTY MILES AWAY. ■Auckland, Last Night. Joseph Ehrman, who escaped from custody at Te Kuiti this morning while being brought up to Auckland under escort in connection with charges of cargo stealing, was captured at Kawa, a small settlement about 20 miles north of Te Kuiti, to-night. No details are available.
