RED CROSS CAMPAIGN.

GREATER EFFORTS' NEEDED,

iA reference to the Red Cross work in the Auckland district was made by the Mayor, when his attention was drawn to the announcement that last year's balance-sheet of the British Red Cross and Order, of- Sb. 3ohn slowed adeficit, of £187,872. "The cabled information as to the financial position," said Mr. Gunson, "appears to indicate that the necessity for lied Cross organisation in Noa* Zealand, with a view to further contributions, is greater than ever. Re ports received from tinie to time from the parent body show that Red Cross operations, and all ti at that means by way of voluntary assistance in this important bja-rcli of war work, absorb several million pounds annually, and as the New Zealand soldiers are receiving ! exactly the same care- and attention as the soldiers of the British regiments,, j New Zealand obviously has a duty \ which is measured only by the service tt at is rendered by this organisation to our sick and wounded. We therefore appeal agait' for the utmost po*>. sible support to tlj.e Red Cross work which will be carried on with redoubled energy in the city and province during the current year. We continue to have the benefit of thp advice of the Business Men?s Committee, but if Auckland is to do it£ share the response during 1918 will have to be much greater than it has "been in past years. No doubt when the needs of tl:e cause continue to be brought home to us, we'shall not fail. In due course full announcements .as-'to the work in the various centres will be made." ,
