RICHMOND BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Richmond Borough • Council met on February 26th. Present: The Mayor (All- W. E. Wilkes), Crs. Thorn, Batt, Ingram, Gross, and Hart. Accounts amounting to £47 17s 5d (general account) were passed for payment.

Correspondence was dealt "with as follows : —

From Mr C. R. Harley, stating that he would leave the repairing of the culvert in .tiie hands of the Council. —Letter received.

From the Manawatu County Council, pointing out the amount of motor traffic that is thrown upon the roads owing to the Government not running special trains to race meetings, and asking this Council's support by petitioning" the member for the district for the resumption .of special trains.—Letter received, and no action taken.

*Rom the British Distillate Company, re distillation of coal-tar.—Letter to bo filed for reference.

The .foreman, reported that owing to the bad weather there had not been much gravel carted. The tarring of the foothpaths and watertables had been commenced. The gravel on the roads had been raked several times. A new plank has been put in -the culvert'in Cemetery road. The water had been laid oii as instructed in Oxford street. On visiting the butter factory, it was found that there was about 30 yards of pipes with: broken joints,- and' the trench was filled in Avith stones and clinkers. It emptied/into a tank 12ft x 6ft and 3ft 6in in depth^ The waterpipe leading; to the adjoining property went through the factory hot-water tank witii a curled pipe and" returned again to the sausage house. The electric globes ordered were, to "hand. During the last fortnight globes had been replaced on Gladstone road, Oxford street, and Queen street, all of which are 25 candle-power. The reservoir had'overflowed since the rain, and on the 23rd was .down Sin from the overflow.—liesolved, tflat the report be received. It having come to the Council's notice that some person had been "substituting the electric lamps on the borough streets, changing 50 and 60 candlepower for lamps of 20 and 25 candlepower, it was decided that the matter be placed m the hands of the police. ; Tiie. Mayor, on behalf of- the Works ; Committee, reported on the state of the j bridge -m {Salisbury road, and recommended that a new decking of black lurch be put on, and that the top be covered with gravel.—Resolved, that this be done.

The Works Committee reported on mil street, and recommended that lft 6m to 2ft be taken off tie rise on Clifton s frontage, the bank on eastern! side be straightened, and 3ft to 4ft be taken off, the spoil used to fill in the hollow abott a chair past the bridge • that Bright's cutting be widened about 4ft,'the spoil to be used to fill up the rollows where the concrete pipes are to be put; that property owners be notified to clear noxious weeks in view of the proposed improvements. All the water tables required cleaning out, and the street should be metalled and patched with beach gravel from end to end. The culvert leading to Mr Higgs's property was not large enough in time of heavy rait, and should Be replaced with larger pipes or a bridge. -—Resolved, that tenders be called for the work in Hill street; that consideration of the specifications for" this work be left in the hands of the Works Committee; tiat property owners in Hill street be given notice to clear their frontages of noxious weeds without de-

From the Westport Council, with reference to holding a conference to make representations to the proper authorities to have Maruia Hot Springs equipped for the treatment of sufferers.—Resolved, that this Council will support any movement for the improvement of the Springs.

of the roller owned by the Cricket Club; that the owner of property on the corner of Dorset street and Cambridge street be requested to lower his hedge, it being dargerous to traffic at its present height; and that the lessee of property at the corner of McShane's road and Lower Queen street be requested to cut his hedge, to obviate the danger to traffic at this corner.
