CAUSE OF GERMAN ATTACK AT VERDUN.
Amsterdam, April 16. German newspapers hint at the abandonment of the attack at Verdun, declaring that the German, move was intended merely, to forestall a tremendous French offensive against -Metz, planned for yesterday. The French calculations of the German losses are .said to be absurd. Tbe Gei-man papers do not give the correct figure, but state that 00 per cent, of the Germans V/otmded at Verdun-will be able to return to the front.
