NEW APPOINTMENTS

Wellington, June 23. The Government has appointed Sir Walter Buchanan and the Hon. J. A. Millar as members of the Legislative Council, thus retaining in the Legislature two very well-known figures. Sir Walter Buchanan was defeated by Mr J. T. M. Hornsby for Wairarapa at the last, election, and the Hon. J. A. Millar voluntarily went into political retirement at that time. / Sir Walter Buchanan celebrated hid 77th birthday recently. Re was born in Argyllshire, and came to Melbourne in 1857. A few years later ho settled in New Zealand, where he has been a highly successful agriculturist; He represented Wairarapa from 1881 till 1899, and again for two Parliaments from 1902. While an Oppositionist,ho distinguished himself % his active participation in the Parliamentary work of his party, taking.his share of the stonewalling with the enthusiasm of a youngster. His generosity is proverbial in the Wairarapa, and there is not a single Parliamentarian, friend or foe., but will bo pleased to see his rugged countenance in the lobbies once more. The Hon. J. A. Millar dates his public career in New Zealand from his appointment as secretary of the Federated Seamen's Union of New Zealand in 1887. Ho was a prominent figure m the maritime strike- of 1890, and ib.nn entered Parliament as a Labour representative, "doing much useful service in the succeeding years of Seddonian labour legislation. He was Chairman of Committees for many years, and became a member of the Ward Ministry in 1908, putting throuch the last revision of the Customs tariff.
