WAKEFIELD QUAY.

UNPROTECTED SEA WALL

ACTION BY MR OAWTHRON.

(From "The Colonist," July 17.) The danger spot on Wakefield Quay constituted b} r the unprotected sea wall between the ond of the present standard and chain fence and the freezing works, which was the scene of a serious accident on Thursday evening, is to be rectified through the public spirited generosity of Mr Thomas Cawthron. Att last night's meeting of the City Council the following letter from Mr Gawthroa was read:—

"I much regret to read in this morning's "Colonist" that there has been another accident off Wakefield Quay by Mrs liobinson falling over the sea front beyond tho freezing works. Will you please have the dwai'f wall, standards, and chains erected from where they now end right up to the freezing works, and I will pay the cost? To save timo I suggest that the work bo offered to the contractors that erected the former extent of wall, standards, and chains, provided they will erect the works now proposed at the rate per chain measure as they did the former works', or.invite tenders for tho same, and so oblige the writer." . Cr. Mercer moved that Mr Cawthron be thanked for his offer, and that the arrangements for carrying out the work do left in the hands of the City Engineer. Tho motion was carried.

The City Engineer explained that the sea wall fit this point was constructed of wood, and it might bo* necessary for the dwarf wall to encroach on the footpath.
