MR. CAWTHRON'S BENEFACTIONS.

THE QUEEN'S DRIVE.

PROPOSED BRIDGE IN TRAFALGAR

street;

(From "The Colonist," June 19.)

The following report was read at last night's meeting of the City Council :— "On June 10th the Mayor, Cr. Piner and tho Town Clerk met Mr. Thon.aOawthron at the Council Chambers, and explained to him that the delay in the completion of the surveyvof the Britannia Heights road was caused by the difficulty in arranging with the Railway authorities regarding the road crossing the line at Bishopdale. The Town Clerk has wrtten to the District Railway Engineer at Greymouth explaining to him the position and it is expected the difficulty will be got over shortly. •'At the meeting Mr. Cawthron discussed the building of a bridge over the Maitai in Trafalgar street. He stated that if a suitable plan for a cart bridge were submitted to him.he would consider the erection of it. We understood that if he were satisfied with the plan, and if he found the bridge could be erected at a reasonable cost he would erect it., Mr. Cawthron mentioned that he thought the bridge should be a flat bridge of ferro-concrete, that it should be 42 feet wide over all, with 8 feet paths on each side, and a 24-feet cart way, and be provided with lamps on each side, and on the central.piers. That the bridge should be of a substantial and lasting nature, not too ornamental but net mean looking, and that it should be erected in the middle of the street. He would like something that would be a fitting concomitant to the Church Steps.

"We recommend that steps be taken to obtain a plan of a bridge that will meet with Mr. Cawthron's views."

The report was received with applause.

The Mayor said the City Engineer had already prepared at Mr Cawthron's request, plans of a bridge which seemed to him (the Mayor) a very excellent and handsome one. Mr. Cawthron desired one or two minor alterations, which could easily be made. Cr. Piper suggested that steps be taken to obtain plants elsewhere. Cr. Moffatt said there was no need to go past their own Engineer. (Hear, hear.) He had seen 'the plans drawn by Mr. Littlejohn, which would provide a bridge that would be an ornament to the city. He moved that Mr. Littlejohn's plans be submitted to Mr. Cawthron.

The motion was seconded by Cr. Webley and carried.
