TIMBER WORKERS
[United Pukss Association.]
Christchurch, Atfril 6. The conference of the New Zealand Federated Sawmills, Timberyard-s, and Coalyards' Employees Union opened today.
_ The report of the executive- said the limber milling industry was one of the first to feel the effect of the h.ysteria which followed th© outbreak of hostilities. Parliament and people both displaj'ed hysteria, and one result was the almost immediate cessation of the building trade and the closing down of many sawmills. The position had now improved, but the industry had not yet recovered from the shock. The report alleged that the employers had abnormally increased the cost of living and reduced the effective wages of the working -classes.
