THE WESTERN THEATRE.

FURTHER PROGRESS AT SOUAIN

GERMAN WORKS MINED IN LE

PRETRE WOOD.

BOMBARDMENT OF YPRES AND

ST. ELOI

BRITISH RECAPTURE LOST

GROUND.

Paris, March 16,

A communique states that further progress has been made north-east of Souain.

Our mines shattered the site of the German defence at the Bois-le-Pretre.

The Germans, smarting from their defeat at Neuve Chapelle, violently bombarded Ypres and St. Eloi on Sunday. Wurterabergers, strongly reinforced from Liege and Ghent, advanced on St. Eloi in dense mayses at nightfall and threatened to envelope the British, who yielded ground under heavy fire, but were reinforced during the night, and retook the village and most of the outside trenches on Monday morning.
