RIWAKA.

During the month ar ther^very old colonist passed away i; the person of Mr. Edward Fitzgerald ~ ?Nabb, at the ripe age of 85. Had !•' lived a few days longer he would have been 86. Mr. McNabb was born in Ireland in February of 1829, his father's regiment, the sth Foot, being then stationed there, but hs boyhood days were spent in Stirling, Scotland. His father, it is interesting to note, also served as a special constable during the strike of the calico printers in March, April and May of 1834. The family came to New Zealand in 1843 in the Indus, landing in Nelson in February of that year. Mr. McNabb had spent most of his time in the Motueka district. For several years he was trading in a small vessel around the bays, also making several trips to Lyttelton. Mr. McNabb's experiences were^varied, and amongst other things in hig early days lie joined a whaling expedition, but in general he followed his trade as a carpenter and builder. Mr McNabb's wife, who was a sister of Messrs. T. Woolf. of Riwaka. and J. Woolf, of Motueka. predeceased him by about 30 years. There were 10 children of the union, 8 of whom are still living— Samuel. John, Edward, Robert. Maurice find Thomas, and Mrs. W. Ryder. of Motn^ka, and Mrs. Baigent. of Nydia Bay, in the Sounds. Two brothers and two sifters survive him— Mpssi-s. Robert ■ McNabb, of Motuekn. and John McXabb. of Riwaka, and Mp«dames J. Woolf. of Motueka, and Allan, of Picton. Mr. McNabb passed away at the residence- of his grandson. Mi1. A. Ryder. Riwaka. His remains were interred in the Ri"nkn Cemetery on Thursday, February 11th. Mr. W. W. The death occurred on Wednesday at the residence of Mrs J, Scott, Factory road, Takaka. of Mrs Martha lorns, aged 93 years, an old and respected identity of Collingwood. Mr George Reay, a well-lcnown farmer, of Brightwater, was found dead outside his house yesterday morning. An inquest was held in the afternoon, when Mr J. S. Evans, Coioner, returned a verdict that death was duo to apoplexy. Mr Reay, who was a widower, leaves a grown-up family. Tho deatli occurred on Friday last at Wellington of Mi Charles Thomas Rout, the third and youngest son of tho late Mr William Rout. The deceased was for some years with Messrs Rout and Sons, but for the past twenty-two years he had been with the. Land and Income Tax Department. He was operated on for appendicitis last Wednesday, but death occurred on the Friday. A widow and three children are left to mourn his loss, the eldest son, Mr Howard Rout, being in the employ of the National Bank of New Zealand, Wellington. Cabled advice was received in Nelson on the 13th inst. that Mr North Belfield Woollcombe and his wife had been killed at Singapore. Mr Woollcombe, who was a son of Captain Woollcombe, R.N., of Timarn, was a cousin of Dr. Andrew, of Stoke, and of Mrs (Dr) Hudson. He joined the staff of the Eastrern Extension Company at Cable Bay, Wakapuaka, about 1891, and was there for four years, when he was transferred to the East. For some years past he had been in the electrical department on board of cable steamers belonging to the company. Mrs Woollcombe belonged to Chnstchurch. and was a daughter of Mr A. Miehie, well known in connection with the Bank of New Zealand. Inquiries have failed to elicit any confirmation of a reportl that the deaths of Mr and Mrs Woc'leombe were in connection with the war.
