GOSPEL IN THE BACKBLOCKS.
GENEROUS GIFT TO NELSON DIOCESE.
(From "The Colonist," Feb. 20.)
A generous gift to the Nelson diocese was made known yesterday. It is the presentation of a van for work in the backblocks, in giving which Miss Marsden further increases the total of her benefactions to tho Anglican Church in the Nelson diocese. It was at Christmas tim© that Bishop Sadlier inaugurated a scheme for carrying the Gospel into the backblocks of the Nelson province, and with this object in view he appealed for donations towards funds lor. a motor boat, to engage in Church work in the Sounds, and a van to reach the more remote centres accessible by road. The proxwsal is to name the boat after Bishop Selwyn, and the van after the Rev. Samuel Marsden. Funds have been liberally subscribed for these worthy objects, and since Miss Marsden's splendid gift has disposed of expense to the church authorities in one direction, the moneys in hand will now be devoted to the motor boat. The subscriptions so far received total half the cost of the craft, tenders for the construction of which will be called for in a few weeks. It is expected that Miss Marsden's liberality will stimulate openhandednose id others, and that the amount required for the launch "Selwyn'' will be made up at an early date.
