INSPECTION BY GENERAL MANAGER.

On Wednesday last the new General Manager of the New Zealand Railways, Mr E. H. Hiley, and his staff, comprising Mr Burnett 'chief engineer), Mr Jackson (chief mechanical engineer). Mr Buxton (chief traffic manager), and Mr Benzoni (district engineer), paid a visit of inspection to the Nelson section of railways. Tho inspection party was accompanied by the local railway manager, Mr Thomas Edwards, who acted as guide to the party and pointed out requirements necessary for the good carrying on of the local line. The Port station and wharves were inspected during the day. The combined party left for the Coast on Thursday morning by special train, and reached Glenhope in three hours, oven after making no less than ten stops en route. (The sched ule time is four hours, so this shows that the much-urged acceleration of train apeed on the Nelson-Glenhope section is feasible). Having inspected the Glenhope terminus the party had lunch, after which one of Newman Bros.' /ears was commissioned for the road journey to Westport, which was reached at 6.30 p.m. in time for dinner. The visiting party experienced delightful weather whilst in Nelson, and on their journey to the Coast, and soemed well pleased with their visit to this province. It is easily possible, given proper facilities - for West Coasters to leave Wellington on one evening, and arrivo in Greymouth or Westport the next.
