THE NELSON BISHOPRIC.

A MUNIFICENT DONATION

OF £6,000 CONDITIONALLY.

(From "Tho Colonist," May 7.)

With the object of raising the income of tho episcopate of Nelson to an amount adequate for tho office and position, some representative churchmen, a few weeks ago formed a committee to make inquiries into ways and means. The committee have received the gratifying iiite'.ligenco that a donor (who for the timo being desires to bo anonymous) is prepared to donate no less a sum than six thousand pounds (£8,000) to the fund, provided that an additional sum of £2,000 is forthcoming from other sources, it being essential "that £8,000 shall be provided to enable the income to be to £1,000 per annum. It is tho earnest desire, of those who are actively associated with the movement that tho necessary amount shall be raised before the Bishop-elect comes to Nelson. That there are- good grounds for tho hope! that this wish will be consummated- it should be mentioned that Mr James Marsden, of Stoke, lias promised £s<)o to the fund, provided that five other gifts of £100 each are forthcoming, and Mrs. Hunter-Brown offers to donate £300 after the sum of £1,000 has been raised. In addition, Mr. Thos. Cawthron has donated £200 unconditionally. Thero is thus, £1,000 of the £2,000 required in sight, and with sucli a splendid lead, it is anticipated that the churchmen of tl s s Dioce&o will' rise to the occasion and by thair response crown tho munificent initial offer with, tho success that should rightly attach thereto.

The donor of the £6.000 wishes to associate tho names of two relatives with the gift, and tho fund will be designate;! "Tho —— Memorial Bishopric Endowment Fund."

Tho committee referred to consists of tho Yen. Archdeacons Graoo, York, Baker (chairman), Revs. J. P Kemothorno, W. S. Lucas, Dr. W. J. Mackay Messrs. J. S. Rutherfurd, A. T. Maginnity, and F. H. Richmond (secretary).

We have. been informed by his Lordship thq Bishop that owing" to altered circumstances the most Reverend the Primate has arranged for tho con&eerrtion of Canon Sadiier to the Bishoiri of Nelson to take place on Sunday, £''lYt July, in Nol&on, instead of St Jan; •' Day, 25th July, in Wellington."
