HAWKE'S BAY LAND BOARD.

A WEALTHY APPLICANT.

[United Press Association.]

Napier, March 10

To-day a somewhat unusual case came before the Hawke's Bay Land Board. A transferee in his declarations stated that his capital was £18,000. The members of the Board were quite unprepared for so wealthy an applicant, and suggested that there must be some mistake, that the amount should bo £1,800. However, the applicant was called, and he confirmed the statement. Then arose a curious position, it being discovered that the transferee -possessed more capital than the law allowed such applicants to have. It was suggested that tho transferee, whose misfortune was to own £18,000, should "consult a solicitor with a view to making a fresh declaration. The land he proposed to acquire would be greatly benefited by the expenditure of the money which this transferee proposed to lay out. and he apepared to be the very kind of settler who does much good on the land.
