DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER

• The dcat.ii inx-iun-d yesterday morning at his residence, Tasmau street, of Mr John Henry Brims, an old and respected resident of tlus city, in his 82nd year. The deceased, who was a native", of Germany, was a sugar baker by occupation, but during his life worked as a miner and latterly as a gardener at the Girls' College. As a youth he left Germany for London, where he married in 1856 and left for New Zealand with his wife, landing in Christchurcb. in December of that year. After farming in Canterbury for five years he sold his -farm and went to the Otago diggings, where lie remained a short time only. In 1861 the late Mr Brans came to Nelson, and was mining at Pakawau and Wakamar'ma. Then he settled hero and was ■gardener for Messrs Symonds, Bennett, and N. Edwards in turn. On tiie death of the late Mr Edwards, and while Mrs Edwards was in England, the deceased remained at "Sunnyside," now Warwick House, for a number of years. For the past 28 years the lato Mr Brans has been gardener at the Girls' College, and ho has been a. trustworthy and much respected servant, who by his kindly disposition endeared himself to many past and present pupils and teachers at the institution. The flag was" flying at half mast yesterday as a tribute of respect to thei deceased. The ilato Mr Bruns, who has been a widower for nearly half a century, leaves a son, Mr J. H. Bruns, of Auckland, and a daughter, Mrs H. Graham, of Nelson four grand children and three great grand children. The deceased was a. very old member of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows. j
