A Tress Association wire states that Mr G. H. Broomo, wlio has been appointed as general manager of the State coalmine in Victoria, lias boon presented at Ngakawau by the residents with a gold watch and chain. Ho was also farewelled at Westport. A London Press Association cable message states that Canon Thompson, of 'Norwich Cathedral, has resigned owing- 'to ill-health. Canon Thompson's action in denying admission to Holy Communion to a man who had married his deceased wife's sister, was recently the subject of litigation in the English ecclesiastical courts. A representative gathering assemb-. led' at Motueka the other evening for the purpose of making a presentation to Mr H. L. Moffatt, on his retirement from the position of harbourmaster and wharfinger, after 33 years* service-. Mr Thomas Pattie, chairman of the Harbour Board, presided, and spoke 'in - high terms of Mr Motfatt's record as a public servant. He read a letter from the Wellington Fruit Brokers' Association, expressing appreciation of Mr Moffatt's services, and asked, his acceptance of a silver match-box, a- sovereign case, and a purse of sovereigns. The Mayor and Messrs A. I. Manoy, W. H. Mander, and Haycock also spoke appreciatively of Mr Moffatt, who suitably "responded.
