FIRE BRIGADES' CONFERENCE.

(United _'_esb Association. J ' Hastings, Feb 21. At tho Fire Brigades' Association's i Conference it was resolved again to hold the prize essay competition on matters. relating to nre brigade work. A committee was set up to consider the whole question of delegates' fares, and other expenses connected witb conferences and demonstrations. The conference unanimously accepted the- explanation (regarding the action of a fire brigade ia presenting a gold star to a member some months before it was due. . The conference) adjourned till tomorrow. ■ A meeting of tho Fire Brigades' Accident Assurance Society was held at Hastings to-day. The executive's report stated that in spite of numerous accident claims made and paid during the past year, there was a satisfactory credit balance. The report recommended that the rebates for the ensuing year be as follows : Brigades not having dirawn benefits equal to fifty per cent of thoir total contributions, receive twenty-five per cent rebate ; over 50 per cent 10 .per cent rebate ; 75 par cent no rebate. . After careful consideration of the question of sick benefits tho executive wore of opinion that ample provision now existed with ' friendly socioties, and any such scheme I ivould be altogether outside the object ! of tlie society, they therefore strongly recommended that no alteration be made. Five brigades were admitted during' the year. The roll number of members now was 1518, or an increase of 85 for the year. The total revenue for tho 3'ear was £24.8 14s 6d, and the payments for accidents £146 10s, leaving a- credit to acoident fund of £1524 Os ld. The executive recommended that a committee be set up to report to this conference on the matter of including brigades working under fire boards in accident societies to include tlie risk under tho Workers' Compensation Act. A committee was sot up accordingly, and tha meeting adjourned till tomorrow.
