Auokiand r Feb; W. Tho first day's racing in the New -Zealand Amateur Swimming Championships provided somo sensational contests. The weather was ideal, the oright sunshiu© being tempered by v I cool breeze. The south wind did noi | alfect the swimmers in tho basin ol the dock. Tho 220 yards championship gave the crowd the first task 1 of a series of sensational performances, Champion, Healey and Freyberg finishing in a line, each being under tlie New Zealand record time. Atkinson created a sensation by winning tho 220 yards breast stroke championship in a world's record time, clipping 3 3-5 sees off P. Mason's time of 3min 4secs. Healej won the 880 yards championship in New Zealand lecord time. Champion started, but when leading on equaj terms with Healey, ricked himself in turning, and gave up at 480 yards. The results were: — 220 yards Championship : M. K. Champion (Auckland) 1, R. Healey (Wellington) 2, B. C. Froyberg (Wellington) 3. Also started, G. Seymour (Napier), 6. H. Bayley (Canterbury), J. Grant (Hawera), R,. Bell (Auckland), and C. Campbell (Wanganui). A splendid race, which, was won by one foot, with a touch between second and third men. Time, 2min 40secs, being a New Zealand record. 220 yards breast stroke: C. A. Atkinson (Canterbury) 1, W. Cook'son (Canterbury) 2, W. B. Jasson (Auckland) 3. Also started, F. Fruscott (Canterbury), A. M. Russell (Canterbury), and W. R. Horton (Auckland). Won by- 20 yards. Time, 3 mm 10 2-5 sees, a world's record. 880 yards Championship : R. Healey (Wellington) 1, Jj\ G. Dodgo (Canterbury) 2, C. H. Rich (Canterbury) 3. Also started, M. E. Champion (Auckland), Grant (Hawera), Aianhire /Canterbury), C. Wilson (Auckland) and F. J. Kemot (Auckland). Champion ricked himself and gave i/p when .loading in company with Healey. Dodge was second,, 26yds away, and Rich syds away third. Time, 12mins 4 3-ssecs, being a New Zealand record. The SOjyards scratch race was won by Marett, of Auckland, with Emerson (Nelson) second.
