NELSON AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB.

A SUCCESSFUL MEETING.

There was a very fair attendance of the public at the Port on Saturday afternoon to witness the annual sports held by the Nelson Amateur Swimming Club. The course, which was between the Anchor wharf and the new Government wharf, is just 50 yards in length. The fields were large, competition keen, and the swimming of a high standard. Coots had all his own way in the 100 yards championship, but failed to catch { Oldershaw in the 100 yards inter- ! club race. Oldershaw swam well, and • won by almost, his handicap. In the schools, championship Reeves was "out on his own," winning his events very easily. He has a .very free style, and should develop into a first-class swimmer. He is a brother to J. lleeves (late of the Amokura), who is very well known in Nelson as a swimmer. Gab'rielson, winner of j the 50 yards iuter-clu-b race, also has I a very free style. He does not seem to take matters at all seriously, and appears nst to- try his best to beat i his opponents-. He swims along so | leisurely that it is a woncler how he ' gets through the water at the speed. If he settled down io hard training he would certainly make a top-no fccher. Gilbert's win^in the Maiden was very popular; as also was the Bay team's win in the relay race. The country clubs were represented

by Challies and O'Connor. Although unable to^am a place in the races, Cliallies won the neat header wiili some really good dives. Shortly afterwards Switzer equalised matters by scoring a beauty. Half time sounded with the score one each. Town attacked from the start, and Hortoiij the Port goal-keeper, was called npon to stop some pretty hot ones. His dofenco proved too good to enable the Town team to get in. Near the call of time Switzer again shot a flood goal for Port, and the game ended with Port victorious by 2 goals to 1. Mr Bethwaite carried tho whistle.
