FANCY DRESS CARNIVAL. A GREAT SUCCESS. Tbe Fancy Dress Carnival at the Palace Skating Rink last evening proved a great attraction, between ninety and one hundred rinkers being on the floor, while the remaindei oT the available space wat> packed *v)th onlookers. There was a variety of characters represented, and some of the costumes worn were very handsome, while others were extremely ludicrous. All taking part displayed very considerable skill on the skates, and the whole effect, of the costumed figures gliding along to the strains of the music supplied by an efficient orchestra, was very striking. Among the characters were courtiers, sailors, stockmen, "old women," Vivandieres, Spanish dancers, Chinamen, clowns, "Night,", a motorist, "Starlight," and many others, including "The Whole Dam Family," a most amusing quintette. Prizes were awarded by the judges as follows: — Most original lady's costume, "Pin Cushion," Miss Neville; most original gentleman's costume, "A Swagger," Mr Reg. Dodson : funniest dressed skaters, "The Dam Twins," Messrs Trent and Hamilton ; best sustained character. "An Old Woman," Mr Sheriff; and the belle of the rink, Miss Everett; The evolutions in the grand march -were most skilfully executed the rinkers following in pairs, fours and single file, and going through a number of graceful movements. The Carnival was altogether a'great success, and it will be repeated again on Saturday evenin, when country people will have ajti opportunity of visiting the rink, and witnessing an event that has not been seen in Nelson for twenty years. , . The Judges were Mr and Mrs F. Glasgow. Mr Booth, and Mrs (Dr) Gibbs.
