EDUCATIONAL ENDOWMENTS.

Blenheim, February 13. a A circular was read at the meeting of the Marlborough Land Board, which notified that the Cabinet has decided to set apart one million acres ; of Crown land as an education en- . dowment. The basis of distribution among the sevoral land districts is to be in proportion to the number of children in each education district. It is proposed to devcte one-half of E the revenue derived horn these en- ■ dowments to primary, one quarter to secondary, and one quarter to techni- £ cal education. The lands are to bo selected from three classes of land, namely, blocks not yet placed in the market, surveyed or unsurvoyed; those advertised |in the Land Guide; 1 and thosegheld and occupied under pastoral license. The circular asked the Commissioner of Crown Lands to recommend reservations. The average number of children attending the primary schools in Marlbroough in 1904 was 6219, and the quota of land required to be set apart in Marlborough would therefore be about 14,000. I In the discussion members of the Board expressed the opinion that fourteen thousand acres would not be a fair allowance for such a large total area of land as Marlborough possesses in proportion to the population, more especially as this province never had a fair share of educational endowment. The matter was deferred until the Commissioner has prepared his recommendations.
