The Acting-Premier.
Speech at Auckland. , Auckland, October 20. Sir Joseph Ward delivered a speech in the Choral Hall to-night. There was a large attendance, and he was accorded an attentive hearing. He gave a general review of the affairs of the Colony, especially as to the 1 financial aspect, and the policy of the Government was outlined. The land settlement question ought to take precedence, industries should be developed, and reductions made on railway charges for assistance to settlers. Producers should be assisted to get fresh markets and c higher prices, and a higher standard ' of education maintained, . and, above all', the Government's first duty to , the people was to maintain sound and'strong finance. j A scene occurred at the conclusion of Sir J. Ward's address, when Mr Richardson, a well-known Prohibitionist, endeavored to move that the 9 Chairman's ruling that no question 3 could be put to the Minister be disapproved of. He was twice removed by two policemen, whereupon the meeting refused to hear the . Chairman, and owing to uproar no vote of thanks could be put. The meeting concluded with three - cheers for Sir J. Ward.
