Poole. : The first sports meeting under the conduot ol the newly-formed smatenr Club was held on September 25tb, and must be considered : in every way a Buccess, and a good aogury for the future of tbe Club. In the morning, it was doubtful whether tbe afternoon would prove fine, but such it did prove, tbe only drawbaok being a bigh wind, which waa, in addition, bitterly cold. Despite tbis, the at-eudance was very satisfactory, the large percen'age of ladies being noticeable. Tbe sport provided in the various contests was of a very fair order, and the genuine endeavors of the contestants noticeable and appreciated. Tbe Olub is to be congratulated npon tbe result of its first meeting, which should prove conclusively that athletic sport wil benefit in every way by doing away witb the professional element. We wish the Club a prosperous career, increasing with the years. One point tbat merits Bpecial mention is tbe promptitude with which events were got off to the timeß announced. Our representative desires to acknowledge the courtesy of the Club officials in supplying all information in their power. The following are the results of the various events : — 100 Yards Handioap— First beat: 0. H Broad, sor 1; E. P Levien, syds, 2 ; time 11 l-sth sees. Three only started ia this beat, and Broad won fairly easily. Second heat : H. S Curtis, 6yds, 1 ; N. B Levien, syds, 2 ; tirr.e 10 3-sth sees. Final heat : Curtis 1 ; E. P Levien 2. In tbis heat Broad was pot baok a yard for breaking away This w»s a very olOße race between the first three men. Considerable disappointment was expressed that Mr Harley, of Wellington, was scratched for tbis and the 1000 yards event. One Mile Cyole Handicap — A* E Houneell was soratohed, not showing up for any of the wheel raceß. F.rst heat: W. Squiera, 15yda 1 ; F. Liley, 150 yds, 2 ; time 2 mina 51 l-sth sees. B. P Giblin, 15 yds, was the only other starter. Won faily easily. Seoond heat: W. B Sanderß, 75yds, 1; F. W Shallorass, sor, 2 ; time 2 mine 52 sees. Banders-' allowanoe proved too much for the soratob man, who obtain ci seoond plaoe by a wheel after a big tussle witb his elder brother, who was receiving 15yds, Final heat: Bandera 1, Squiers 2, F. W Shallcrass 3; tim 9 2 mins 49 2-sth sees. , Sanders won by abont half his allowance. 220 Tarda All Schools Baoe— First heat : P. H Muleß, sor, 1 ; L. Baigent, 15yds, 2; time 25 2-sih bsob. There were five starters. Mules running strongly; won fairly easily. Armstrong and Webb-Bowen ied for third place. Secoad heat: A.W.Collins, 9yds, 1; H. o. l'Obinaon, 6 jurds, 2. Time, 25 4-saecs Four starters. Collins won easily, Bobinson falling at getting away. Final beat: Muleß, 1; Collins, 2. Time, 25 2-sseoa. A good raoe, Mules just managing to pull it off. 1000 Yards Fist Handicap.— Five only of eleven entrants Btarted, and two of theße obviously only to make a show, and the effect was that most of the spectators thought wben tbe prooeesion was over tbat it had occupied quite fonr minutes in passing, but the three timekeepers' watoheß agreed upon 2mins 42 2-ssecs as the oorrect time. H. S. Cuitis. 20yds, 1 ; 0. H. Broad, 15yds, 2. 10 Mi c Cyole Handicap. - Six oot of eight entrants came on the track, but A W Shallorbßß (150 yds) bad to go off again almost immediatelyjthrough something going wrong with tbe obain of his maohine. F. W. Shallcrass and Squier at » cratch started off at a snail's pace, the result being tbat before nine of tbe tbirty-one 1-tps were finished, Leaver (225 yds) bnd Sanders (400y<?s) were riding just behind tha scratoh men, thus baying a lap to the good Tbe four men kept close together till tbe 20th round, when tbe soratob men drew away, but it wbs only momentarily, and the old positions obtained till tha 27th round, when Leave* pasted the soratch men, tben fell baok, and was passed by Sanders, only to pass Sanders in turn at lap 29. Squier retired in his 29th round. Finally Leaver poshed to the front, and won by about 70yda from Sanders, and a lap and 30yds from Sbullorass. 'lime, 33 mins 59 3-saecs. Consolation Baoe, 100 yards, for boys unsuccessful in All Sohools Baoe. Presented by Mr ft. Alhn.— Tbis brought out seven contestants, and a splendid race resulted : Arm-trong, 5 yds, 1 ; L. Baigent, 4 yds, 2 ; Bobinson, scratoh, 3. Time, 12 eees. Some thought it a tie between the boys plaoed first and second. At the conclusion of the sports, Mrs Mules presented the trophies to winners, an additional smile greeting the stalwart winner of the All Schools race. Oheers were given for Leaver atd Sanders, wbo rode well in the oyole races. Three cheers were given for Mrs Mules, and the proceedings ended. Tbe winners cf the 100 Yards, One Mile Cyole, and All Schools races, |are requsted to hand in their trophies to Mr Moyea, when tbey will be suitably engraved. We are pleased to be able to a'ale that the sport i proved a finanoial success, over £17 being taken Bt tbe gates.
