THE BISHOPDALE SKETOHING CLUB EXHIBITION.

The exhibition wbich was opened in the Bishop's Schoolroom on September llth, under the auspices cf the Bifhopdale Sketohing Club is, in many ways, extremely interesting. From Jho modest name of |tbe

i.ub it would be unreasonable to expeot a w rreat amount of finished work, and more tl lartioularly from an inspection of the ni icreens and all they contain, as weiias cf the lortfolioß, is it apparent that the members V( »f the club have shown their ord nary studies, h 3ad they elect.-d to select only their very tl iest, there is no doubt some rather oiude Vl york would not bave found a plaoe atthe ai mnual exhibition, but the exhibits as hung N or inspection enable the visitor to appreciate d ihe steady work that is being done, and in tc some instances to notice marked improve- E nent. C Amongst the Nelson exhibits on tbe walls tl Miss Nina Jones exhibits a number of pic- 1 iures, and amongst them "Petone" merits tl particular mention. Tbe subject includes b shore and ie&, with a eteamer lying at a pier, fi md the general treatment is decidedly v good. No. 57, " Under a Sunny Sky," ia a c bright and effective picture, while No. 63, tl " A Study from Life," the girl holding a n basket, shows good posing. ti Of the exhibi- s by A. E. Graves, a painting b in oils, " Blind Bay," calls for notice. C. n Talbot Bhows some flower Budie*>, and c No. 51, "Todd's Bush," by A V. Old- I bam, possesses much merit, the near s distance in particular. No. 43, "A Peep t of the Sea," a painting in oils by C. A. t Sadd may also be mentioned. Col. BranfiU t exhibits some pastels, No. 42, a girl wea* ing a t red hood, being the moat noticeable. Mra t Topliss shows a number of pictures, and 1 amongst them a girl's head, b-ing a study c from life, is certainly one of tbe best. Of 1 the ba'f-dozen pictures shown by A. M. Bell, 3 No, 24, " Mouth of the Maitai," is perhaps i the beßt, and tbe subject is well treated. L. 1 Ciouston and T. V. Banfield both show < interesting flower studies, and of tie moie < numerous contributions of tbe last mentioned < we prefer No. 12, "Ox Ey§s." 0. Talbot ex- 1 hibits two flower paintings, and two or three landscapes, the work being very even, and ! Miss E. Harris shows a still life study, and : a pioture of Separation Point, which command attention. There are also some copies, notably of some of the late Mr John Gully's paintings. The Wellington contributors to the exhibition are 0. E. Butler, — Dransfi Id, J. M. Nairn, J. Baillie, D. K. Bichmond and M. 0. Smith. Strante to cay, greens so predominates in the works of these eont ibutiona as to affect the collection. Two pain'*ings in oil by C. E. Butler, "Wind acd Wt»ve," and '• The Fisherman " are among t the best in the seotion. While the predominating color in the exhibits of tbe Wellington Art Club are green, tbat of the Christohuroh Palette Club is blue, but, nevertheless, come r_ embers of that Club show some good woik. No. 8, " New Brighton," by W. Gibb, contains much of merit, though the olo'id effects are detracting. A very pleading picture is that by E. Slater, " A Cornfield," while W. 0 Fanholme's " fisherman's Fiat " is oleverly t-eated, though a more effective subject might well have been chosen. " Tha Htathcote " and " On a Sunken Beef," by the same artist, merit mention, wbile H. Gibson's " Autumn " is likewise effective, and " On the Avon " by the same exhibitor potses3es muoh of merit, though the water-line is soaroely perfeo.. Tbere are some admirable sketches by Nora Gardner, and some othera which are also very good by Miua Gardner. We desire to compliment the ladies of the Bishopdale Sketching Club*, upon whom tha duties devolved, not only upon the care taken in hanging the exhibits, but in tbe effective decorations, wbich were decidedly aitistic. In addition to the drapery, piimroßes, violets, and bunches of narcissus were disposed naturally and effectively. Then, too, tbese ladies reoeived visitors yeßte day afternoon, and kindly dispensed afterooon tea, while, as a (urther attraction, vocal and instrumental musio was provided. As included in the musical programme we may mention excellent songs rendered by the Eev J. P. Kempthorne, Miss Fell, Mr F. Bennett, and an instrumental performance by Mies Wetb-Bowen.*
