SCOUT RALLY

TE AWAMUTU SUCCESSES GATHERING AT HAMILTON Last Saturday was the occasion of a Boy Scout rally, held at Rugby Park, Hamilton when over 200 Scouts and Cubs gathered from all parts of the Waikato, to compete in the work which they had been doing over the year. This was the first rally since the war and is to become an annual fixture again. All the competitions are based on training and work by Troops over the year, and groups represented on Saturday were from Otorohanga, Te Awamutu, Hamilton, Cambridge and HuntlyTe Awamutu held their own with the city groups and the Cubs gained the honours, the Beaver Pack obtaining three firsts and the Hunters Pack two, while the Troop gained two firsts. St Patrick’s Troop also did well and gained two firsts. The competitions and results in the Cub Section were:— Understanding the Law and Promise: Hunters, Te Awamutu. Ball Throwing and Catching Relay: Hunters, Te Awamutu. Play acting and demonstrating the story of one of the Patron Saints of the Union Jack: Beavers, Te Awamutu. Knottnig: Beavers, Te Awamutu. Leap Frog: Ist Frankton. Relay Book Balancing: Huntly. Handicraft by Modelling: Beavers, Te Awamutu. Jungle Dance, one of the Cub stories from Kipling’s book “Kim”: Southern Cross. Signalling: Ist Frankton. The Scout section was, of course, more intensive. First Aid by a team of four attending a fracture case, won by St Peters, Hamilton. Tent patching resulted in a dead heat by Claudelands and St Peters. Distance pacing, by whi/h Scouts should know their own measurements, was a win for St Patricks, Te Awamutu. Woodcraft in builidng a bushman’s reflector fireplace from logs, won by Ist Frankton. Scout pace of one mile, to be done in 12 minutes, resulted in a dead heat for St Peters and Claudelands. Nature observation by identifying trees by their leaves, won by Ist Frankton. Pioneering in lashing together poles to make a signalling tower not less than 10 feet in height was won by Te Awamutu. Campcraft in boiling a pint of water was won by Otorohanga. Rescue, lift and carry of an injured or insensible person, won by Ist Railway, Hamilton. Verbal message relay, won by Ist Frankton. Coat stretcher relay, to improvise a stretcher from coats, won by Southern Cross. Campcraft in fire lighting, given a block of wood and two matches and axe. This was very exciting with Te Awamutu and Ist Railway both boosting their fires with gusto but Ist Railway was first to burn through the set cord above the fires.

Troop stunt of a runaway horse was vron by Claudelands and the Troop yell by Ist Railway. Compass relay in boxing the compass, won by Ist Railway. Rope splicing, back and eye splice, by St Patricks’, Te Awamutu; knot tying by St Peters; mapping by Ist Frankton; use of Scout staff in constructing a flagstaff and hoisting and breaking the flag, won by Otorohanga. Signalling by semaphore by Te Awamutu.
